Artesia's next coming attraction - the Second & Texas Streetscape Improvement Project - is underway! This project consists of 13 blocks of streetscape renovation, which has been divided into two phases, and is expected to be completed over the next few years.
- Phase I - Second & Texas intersection - Will include a modern-day roundabout, and street improvements one block in each direction. This phase will consist of four separate phases, all of which is currently under construction and is expected to be completed by the first of May, 2008.
- Sub-Phase I - Texas Avenue will be blocked off from 1st-3rd, and Second Street from the intersection of Texas to the alley, just south of the sheriff’s office. This phase is currently under construction.
- Sub-Phase II – Texas Avenue will be blocked off from Roselawn to 3rd Street. This phase is scheduled to begin construction during the week of November 12. The will also break this phase into two separate pieces, splitting the road into two parts. This will allow for continuous pedestrian traffic and business access, as well as a preventative measure for permitting weather. Estimated time for completion for this phase is ten weeks.
- Sub-Phase III – Second Street from just south of Texas Avenue, mid-block, to Main Street will be blocked off for construction. This area is estimated to begin by the end of January 2008. Total completion time, estimated, is six weeks.
- Sub-Phase IV – Second Street from Texas Avenue to Chisum Avenue will be blocked off for construction. This project is scheduled to begin in March 2008, and estimated completion is four weeks.
- Phase II – Consist of Texas Avenue from 4-7th Streets, with all connecting side streets to Main Street; Second Street from Chisum Avenue to Mahone; Second Street from Main Street to Richardson Avenue. AMS and the City of Artesia are currently seeking funding sources to complete the construction of this phase, and hope to complete the overall project in a timely manner.
