School's Out Summer Splash

Last Day of School

Martin Luther King Recreation Complex

The School's Out Summer Splash is a wild and wet afternoon that welcomes summer. The last day of school is always short; students officially say hello to summer by noon and head to the Splash at Martin Luther King Recreation Complex.

Artesia Fire Department provides the day's highlight. With a fire truck and ladder, firefighters spray down a corner of the park and whoever happens to be standing there. The splash pad also provides a fun and wet time to those that don't wish to get dirty!

Not everyone gets wet. In other corners of the park, there are basketball courts, volleyball courts, the Frisbee course, the skate-park, good old-fashioned summer food, and lots of popular music. Organizations set up booths to sell goodies or pass out information about summer activities.

At the end of the afternoon, AMS rewards youngsters who volunteer to help pick up litter in the park. By 5:00 p.m., the park is clean, the grass has been watered, and so have hundreds of students. This event officially kicks off summer for the students of Artesia!

Back to School Bash

First day of school

Martin Luther King Recreation Complex

It has been said that Artesia is probably the only town that has a party to celebrate the first day of school!  The Back-to-School Bash gets students together in the early evening after the first day of class and gives them a chance to talk about classes and teachers, compare summer notes, and find friends not seen since last school year.  Fun is associated with school as the younger children meet high school athletes and cheerleaders, play games, enjoy hotdogs and watermelon, and visit friends.

Art Auction

Biannually

Co-sponsored by Artesia Chamber of Commerce

The annual Art Auction is a fun opportunity to purchase and enjoy art of all forms. The evening will include drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and multitudes of art. Attendees can place bids on stone and bronze sculptures, paintings, photography, and many other beautifully crafted items by both local and renowned artists and artisans. There are both silent and live auctions for bidders to obtain anything and everything they wish. While there is no formal entertainment, the refreshments, art work, and intimate setting should keep any art lover enthralled. Funds raised benefit Artesia Chamber and Artesia MainStreet, assisting in the production of the annual events of each.

Let's Light Up the Landsun

Biannually

Land of the Sun Movie Theatre

In 1947, a first-class, state-of-the-art movie theater, Land of the Sun, opened in Artesia. It was operated by the Gilchrist family until 1975.  Eventually it came into ownership by Carmike Cinemas, and by the late 1990s, the theater had become rundown, inside and out.

Artesia MainStreet and Carmike Cinemas reached an agreement in mid-2001 to make some changes at the theater – Carmike would improve the interior, and AMS would be responsible for the façade. Carmike also agreed that the theater’s name would return to Land of the Sun.

On Dec. 8, 2001, AMS celebrated the renovation of Artesia’s only movie theater at the Let’s Light Up the Landsun gala. Now, once a year, AMS celebrates its volunteers and year’s activities at the Landsun. Guests enjoy a fine meal and then a trip to the movies to watch a classic film. The party is always theme-driven, and guests are encouraged to dress in the styles of the era of the film. To keep the community guessing, the party is held at a different time each year and proves to be a special and welcoming event, whatever the time of year.  Carmike Cinemas, J. S. Ward & Son, and Navajo Refining Company are annual sponsors of the party.

Light Up Artesia

First Thursday of December

Co-sponsored by the Artesia Chamber of Commerce

Light Up Artesia is the official start to the holiday season in downtown Artesia! Co-hosted by the Chamber of Commerce, Artesia MainStreet becomes a winter wonderland with thousands of lights in the trees down Main Street. Everyone counts on the event every year on the first Thursday evening after Thanksgiving to usher in the holiday season. Santa Claus is escorted into the downtown area by our very own US Border Patrol, Winged Riders of Artesia, and Artesia Car Enthusiasts. He stays and listens to holiday requests, while businesses remain open late and offer great deals. Organizations and individuals set up outdoor booths downtown to sell hot foods and crafts. Downtown twinkles and community spirit shines during Light Up Artesia as people stroll, shop, and eat.
